First data center with innovative heat recovery in Berlin

Currently, the final planning for a third ScaleUp data center location in Berlin is underway. We expect to move into the new location in Berlin Mahlsdorf (BER3) in spring 2022.

The newly renovated data center in Berlin-Mahlsdorf will set new standards for ScaleUp in terms of security, efficiency and sustainability. Thus, in addition to ISO27001 certification, the new data center is also certified according to the TSI (Trusted Site Infrastructure) of TÜViT as an Level 3 enhanced data center certified. This means it offers a particularly high level of security and genuine high availability. Furthermore, security personnel are on site around the clock.

Innovative, efficient and thus particularly sustainable

We are also breaking new ground in terms of technical setup and energy efficiency with the Mahlsdorf data center location in East Berlin. Of course, the data center - like all other ScaleUp data center sites - draws 100 percent of its power from renewable sources. In addition, all cold aisles between the racks are provided with a modular enclosure, and all open height units of the racks are blinded to avoid unnecessary cooling losses. For the power supply of the racks, we rely on fully monitored rack PDUs. This allows customers to optionally read power consumption of individual outlets. Like the enclosures, all racks are built with a modular system that allows further adjustments even after commissioning. For this reason, the data center in Mahlsdorf will in future have quartered racks in addition to whole and half racks. Small cages can also be created thanks to the modular system.

Heat recovery (Heat Recovery)

One of the most important innovations, however, will be an innovative heat recovery system. In the future data center in Mahlsdorf, the waste heat from the operated servers can be used directly on site for the cultivation of algae. The algae extract CO2 from the air and can be used in many ways, e.g. in the food industry, for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and for pet food. The equally promising use for bioethanol is currently being researched. The direct use of waste heat saves energy that is needed to heat the aquariums, as well as capturing CO2 from the air. This is a first important step towards a circular economy in the digital economy.
