Tips for saving power in the colocation data center

Perhaps you are wondering whether you too can contribute something to more sustainability in the rented data center. In short: Yes! Colocation customers can also help to significantly reduce power consumption in the data center by following a few simple rules.

Perhaps you are wondering whether you too can contribute something to more sustainability in the rented data center. In short: Yes! Colocation customers can also help to significantly reduce power consumption in the data center by following a few simple rules.
  1. Heavy and heavy-load servers should be placed further down near the ventilation exits.
  2. Unused "zombie" servers, which are not actively used, consume a lot of power even though there is no load (approx. 40% of a server running under load). You can turn these off.
  3. Empty height units should be closed with a panel to prevent mixing of the air from the cold and hot aisles. The panels are freely available for you at the respective ScaleUp locations.
  4. Also, neat wiring of the ports on the server will help distribute the cooling air better, so fan fans in the server can run slower.

In addition to all these measures, it is also worth considering an alternative virtualization solution. Microservice applications run much more resource-efficiently in an efficient cloud environment, also because cloud servers are usually better utilized than the individually operated IT infrastructure.

ScaleUp is a business hosting company with 20 years of experience in server colocation, managed hosting and operates own cloud infrastructures. Since 2019 we strive to reduce our carbon footprint at our 6 data center locations in Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf and participate in the ECOPROFIT program 2020/21. We are happy to answer Your questions regarding climate-friendly hosting.

Where is Open Compute headed? Impressions from OCP Summit 2022

This year, the annual global Open Compute Project Summit took place in San José (CA) from October 18-20. We were there ourselves and want to share some of our impressions here.

Special features of OpenCompute Servers - How OCP hardware differs from classic hardware.

After our introduction to OpenCompute hardware, in this post of our OCP series we want to go into a bit more detail about the design of OpenCompute hardware, specifically the server design and how it differs from classic hardware.

Open Compute Hardware Makes Data Centers Fit for Green IT

Open Compute Hardware (OpenSource Hardware) has enormous potential to sustainably improve resource efficiency in data centers. What is the Open Compute Project (OCP)?

Autoscaling in Kubernetes

One of the great promises of using Kubernetes is the ability to scale infrastructure dynamically, based on user requirements. However, by default, Kubernetes does not automatically add or remove instances. To do this, the Kubernetes...
